Oud Wood: The Black Gold of Perfumery
Imagine a deep, smoky, animalic scent that transforms any perfume into something utterly unique and addictive. Oud wood is known as the "black gold" of perfumery, and in this guide from Perfumes LAROME we tell you absolutely everything about it.
What exactly is Oud wood?
Oud wood, also known as agarwood or agar, is no ordinary wood. It comes from the Aquilaria tree, native to Southeast Asia, which only develops its aromatic resin when infected by a parasitic fungus.
This natural defence mechanism causes the wood to darken, harden and become saturated with a dense, fragrant resin. Without infection the tree is just white, odourless wood; with it, it becomes one of the world's most extraordinary olfactory treasures. Less than 7% of these trees produce Oud naturally, which explains its absolute exclusivity.
Where is Oud grown and produced?
The Aquilaria tree grows mainly in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and parts of India and China. The most prized variety is Aquilaria malaccensis, which can reach up to 50 metres in height.
Today, due to over-harvesting, many producers artificially induce the infection in controlled plantations to preserve the species. Even so, wild Oud remains the most prized: more complex, more intense and far rarer.
Why is Oud so expensive?
The price of pure Oud can exceed €30,000 per kilo, comparable to gold or white truffle. Its cost factors combine extreme rarity, time and process:
- 🌳Extreme rarity
Only 2–7% of Aquilaria trees become naturally infected and produce aromatic resin. - ⏳Decades of maturation
The process requires a minimum of 20 to 75 years for premium quality. Centuries-old specimens produce the most valuable resin. - ✂️Painstaking extraction
Only the infected part of the tree is cut so it continues producing. A craft process that demands skill and precision. - 💧Concentration in perfume
Even at minimal concentrations (0.1–2%), Oud raises the price of any fragrance that includes it.
What does Oud wood smell like?
Oud has no single aroma: it varies by origin, quality and harvest year. But in general it evokes a deep olfactory experience that is hard to forget:
How is Oud used in perfumery?
In perfumes, Oud is used in very low doses — between 0.1 and 2% — precisely because of its overwhelming intensity. It is typically used in the base of a composition, where it acts as an eternal fixative and anchors the other notes for hours.
Its best pairings in perfumery:
- 🌹Oud + Rose / White flowers
The most opulent and romantic contrast in Arabic perfumery. The flower softens, the Oud deepens. - 🌙Oud + Spices, amber and vanilla
The foundation of great luxury orientals: warm, deep and addictive. - 🍊Oud + Citrus or fruit
For fresher, more modern versions that make Oud more accessible and contemporary.

Traditional uses of Oud beyond perfumery
Oud has accompanied humanity for centuries. In the Middle East and Asia it is burned as incense in religious rituals and welcoming ceremonies, purifying the air and creating a sacred atmosphere. In traditional Chinese medicine it is used as a relaxant, digestive aid and antioxidant. Dark wood carvings and sculptures in Oud are prized as art objects for their unique beauty.
Today it dominates Arabic luxury perfumery, European niche perfumery and the great Asian houses as the ultimate emblem of olfactory opulence.
Oud is not just an ingredient. It is a sensory experience that transforms any fragrance into something utterly unforgettable.
